Introducing Rotarians Against Malaria:

Welcome to Rotarians Against Malaria – an activity of Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS)

Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM) is a volunteer-run organisation working to eliminate malaria. In 1900s, malaria was pandemic in the world. One can only imagine the burden of malaria disease to all countries. Progress has been made. Fifteen years ago, malaria killed a child every 30 seconds. Under the Millennium Development Goals, however, considerable progress was made in preventing, diagnosing and treating malaria. As a result, deaths have fallen by 60 percent. Now, under the ambitious Sustainable Development Goals, we are aiming to reduce malaria cases and deaths by a further 90 percent by 2030.

Malaria remained as one of the major causes of death in many developing countries (in red and purple) (Malaria World Congress, 2018)

Rotarians Against Malaria is an activity of Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) and covers the following countries:

  • Australia
  • Papua New Guinea – RAM PNG is a partner of RAM in Australia
  • Solomon Islands
  • Timor Leste

NEW!! WHO World Malaria Report 2019

The much anticipated World Malaria Report 2019 is available! The good news is that there was a reduction in malaria cases with three (3) million cases less in 2018 than in 2017. The number of deaths has also reduced with an estimated 405,000 in 2018 and 416,000 in 2017. Ninety-four (94%) percent of deaths were in WHO African Region. Globally, the World Health Organisation (WHO) African Region had 93% of the total number of malaria cases. In contrast, the WHO South-East Asia Region contributed 3.4% to all malaria cases, and 2.1% from the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region. An important message is that globally, progress flatlined over the last four years between 2014 and 2018.

Volunteer Trips

We facilitate opportunities for Rotarians and Rotaractors, especially those with expertise in medical science and project governance, to visit our in-country programs. In 2017, Dr Jenny Kerrison (PhD, DEd, RN, RM) led a group of RAM volunteers to Timor Leste. A brief RAWCS online report is available at our Newsletters page.
