WHO Reports
Globally, progress has stalled since 2015. Malaria is preventable and treatable. Yet, cases are increasing, and we continue to have malaria related deaths mostly in children under 5 years. In 2021, there was a slight increase in cases with 247 million cases from 245 million in 2020 with 95% of malaria cases were in Sub Sahara Africa. Malaria deaths declined slightly in 2021 to 619 000. 96% of all malaria deaths are in African Region with 80% of all malaria deaths in children aged under 5 years. COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to increased cases and deaths. Malaria elimination is off track in all WHO Regions except South-East Asia (World Malaria Report 2022).
